 Ivica Brnić is an architect, author and educator whose work explores the role of architecture in an increasingly abstract and mediated world. Through practice, university teaching, research and publications, he investigates how construction, material and human experience continue to shape the built environment as a lasting cultural reality. Architecture gives lasting form to what matters.

 Formation

Ivica Brnić’s formation combines architectural design, construction and the study of perception.

Educated at ETH Zurich, he later completed a doctorate at TU Wien and pursued further studies in perceptual cognition and spatial perception at the University of Vienna. His research on sacred aspects in contemporary profane architecture established a lasting interest in the relationship between construction, perception and presence.

Practice

He has worked independently since 2005. Beginning with the ETH House of Science in Bamiyan, his practice has been shaped by the mediation between architectural idea, built reality and human experience. After international project coordination at Atelier Podrecca, he joined MALEK HERBST Architekten in Vienna in 2010, becoming Head of Design in 2020.

His work brings together ideas, constraints and possibilities into coherent architectural form through spatial clarity and constructive precision. Working across projects of different scales and complexities, he develops architecture through the interplay of concept, construction and use. Theatre and opera extend this concern into fields in which body, movement and perception are directly staged. Academia

At TU Wien, Brnić taught and researched at the Institute of Architecture and Design and later held a university professorship. Over more than a decade, he developed teaching and research centred on construction, space perception and sacred architecture, including the research platform Construction and Spatial Composition.

Sacred space serves as a lens through which questions of resonance and tectonics become visible. Approximation across design, research and teaching remains a recurring framework.

Discourse

Through publications, lectures, exhibitions and symposia, Ivica Brnić investigates how architecture acquires meaning and permanence while responding to changing cultural and technological conditions through structures of perception and resonance.

These questions find expression through architectural writing and publication, most notably in Nahe Ferne and Venturing Permanence, and through exhibitions and public formats such as Du im Raum, Sacred Modernity, Gravity and Grace and Vom Handwerk zur Höhe. His work has appeared with Park Books, gta Verlag / ETH Zurich, Hatje Cantz, Birkhäuser, Jovis, GAM, Oris and San Rocco.
